Infant Product Hits and Misses

In my deal group, I feel like I am constantly posting deals and saying "my kids love this!"   After writing that phrase for what felt like the millionth time, I had the bright idea that I should put all these things we love in one place!  Of course, along with things we love came those inevitable misses.  I am sure you've had them- those baby "must haves" that you just HAD to register for only to think they were a total waste of money in the long run.

So here you go, my baby product hits and misses for the infant stage!  You can link to the product on Amazon if you click on the name. Yes, even the misses :)

V-Tech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker- I know that this is more of a bigger baby/kid toy but this is the #1 purchase I have made for my kids to date because of how it grows with them.  It lights up and plays songs so it was great for entertaining my kids when they were itty bitty.  The face of it comes off so once they get a little older, it becomes a floor toy.  Then, they can use it as a walker.  My son still played with this thing at age 2.5.  You will DEFINITELY get your money's worth on this toy.

Look, Look Book-  This book is a simple book of black and white images.  Both my kids LOVED it as infants and were mesmerized by the images.  It was awesome for helping them tolerate tummy time.  I make sure to include this in baby shower gifts because it is simply a must have!!!

Colic Calm- Both my kids were screamers as babies.  As in, "cry for hours while I want to crawl in a hole far, far away and escape" kind of screamers.  Nighttime was particularly bad for both of them.  I tried a bunch of gas drops and the only thing that seemed to work was Colic Calm.  It was crazy because with my daughter especially, I would give it to her as she screamed her head off.  Once she had her dosage, she would settle, look at me and eventually fall asleep. It didn't make things 100% better all the time, but it definitely saved me many times I thought I was about to lose it from the crying and not being able to calm them.

Baby K'tan Wrap & Ergobaby Carrier- Going along with the product rec above, baby wearing also saved my sanity.  My son literally screamed every second he was awake for the first few months.  My husband would arrive home and I would hand him over in tears because I was so relieved to get a break.  Once he was big enough, I started putting him in the k'tan and he loved it!  The K'tan is a soft wrap type carrier but it is super easy to use after trying it on a few times.  I could finally eat without him screaming!  It was also great for grocery shopping or wearing him in public because as a preemie, I was very cautious about people touching him (why do people think it is ok to stick their hands in your baby's carseat in public?!? I will never get this!)  I used the k'tan up until they were 4-5 months then it was time to graduate to the Ergo!

myBaby SoundSpa Portable- You NEED a sound machine! We have one for each kid and love them!  My son sleeps like a rock so it was just extra insurance to keep him sleeping but for my daughter (the world's lightest sleeper ever) it has been a lifesaver.   I love that it can plug in or use batteries.  A sound machine, not just this one, is a MUST for any parent in my opinion!

Heating Pad- Are you scratching your head on this one?  This is another lifesaver!  I had problems with middle of the night feedings and my kids flipping out when I transferred them back to their bassinet/crib.  I started putting a heating pad in the bassinet/crib when I took them out to feed.  It kept the bed nice and toasty while they ate.  I removed it before I put them back then laid them down.  It worked like a charm!  Don't you love those secret mom tricks?!?

Manhattan Toy Wimmer-Ferguson Double Sided 3-in-1 Triangle Play and Pat Activity Mat- This one is really for any of the Manhattan Toys high contrast items.  My kids had the infant stim mobile and they LOVED it.  These toys are black, white and red images and it was awesome how intently they would be mesmerized.

Sophie the Giraffe- It looked like a $20 small teething toy to me and that is exactly what it turned out to be with both kids.  While my friends raved "We love Sophie over here!" my kids simply threw her on the floor.  My dog, however, loved that she squeeked and would try to nab her any chance he could get but that was not the intended all.

Cloud b Sleep Sheep- When I was pregnant with my first, everyone had this on their registry.  It was adorable.  It never did the trick for my son and actually broke within the first few months so we opted for a traditional sound machine instead.

Bumbo Seat- I feel like this one is a miss for a lot of people.  My kids each sat in it approximately 3 times each and wanted out quickly.  It was good for photo ops when I wanted them propped up but other than that, don't bother.

Mamaroo- I had this for my second baby only.  While it was fancy and my daughter slept in it fine, I thought it was overpriced for what it was.  Also, since she was baby #2, I didn't like that it was at my son's level and he could reach in any second.  One day I went in the kitchen to grab his milk and when I came back, she had a bunch of small toys on her.  A nice gesture but I didn't like that he could reach in so easily.  We had the Fisher Price Snug A Bunny swing for baby #1 and I think I preferred that.

Buy it used or wait for a deal

Jumparoo- Don't get me wrong.  Both my kids loved the Jumparoo.  My issue is with the fact that it was one of the priciest things on my registry yet had such a short span of use.  If I did it over, I would have bought it used or kept my eyes peeled for a deal.

There you have it!  These are my hits and misses for birth to 6 months.  Do you agree?? You are enraged that I labeled Sophie a miss, aren't you? Let me know what you think!

Reliving my Childhood

My husband, son and I took a special trip to Sesame Place together last week just the 3 of us (no baby sister- my son was confused but excited)!  It was really nice to spend some 2 on 1 time with him and it was even more fun to run around the park like we were kids ourselves!  I loved seeing the excitement on his face as he saw a new character or ride.  Plus, I got a great deal on Groupon for the tickets, so that made it even better (I mean, come on.  Did you think I would actually pay full price for something?!?!).

Mother and son decades apart!

These moments and memories are the reasons people have kids! :)

Mini S'more Recipe

This post may contain affiliate links.  See full disclosure here.

You are welcome in advance because this recipe is a-ma-zing (if I must say so myself)!  I started making Mini S'mores a few years ago from a recipe I got from Pampered Chef.  I have adapted it over the years and make it for literally any and every occasion that calls for treats. Beware- they are oh, so addicting!

Time: 20 minutes
Yields: 35-45

2 Giant Hershey Chocolate Bars
1 Bag of Marshmallows
1 Stick of Butter
1 Sleeve of Graham Crackers
Mini baking cups (I bought mine off Amazon. They are also sold in the grocery store)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Place 8 graham crackers in a gallon size bag.  Crush into small pieces with a rolling pin or meat mallet.

3. Melt 1 stick of butter completely in microwave.

4. Combine butter and crushed graham crackers.

Hint: I like to add half the graham crackers, mix then add the rest.

5. Lay baking cups on baking sheet.  Press enough graham mixture to cover bottom of cup.  You do
not want to make them too thick.

6. Bake at 350 degrees for 2 minutes.  While they are baking, cut marshmallows in half.

Hint: Wet your knife then cut.  It makes it a million times easier to cut through!

7. Once you remove baking cups from oven, place a small square of Hershey bar in each cup (I usually break them into their rectangles then break the rectangle into 4 pieces).  Cover with the half marshmallow.

8. Bake for at 350 degrees for 2 minutes (NO LONGER!)

9. While cups are baking, break Hershey bars into pieces.  Melt in microwave, about 1 minute.

10. Remove from oven.  Pour small amount of chocolate on top of each marshmallow.

11. Let cool for 30 minutes.  If you are in a rush, you can stick them in the refrigerator.

12. ENJOY!!!!

Amazon Deal FAQ

This post may contain affiliate links.  See full disclosure here.

Since I am now an old pro at posting daily deals on my fan page, I am realizing that I get a lot of similar questions so I figured an FAQ of sorts might help!  Here are the most frequently asked questions when it comes to deals on Amazon...

1. How come the price on the deal is different than the one you posted?
Amazon's prices fluctuate....constantly!   If a deal is listed at a certain price and the price is higher...often a lot higher....the deal may be over.
A good way to check is see who the seller is.  I generally post items sold directly from Amazon.  A "3rd party seller" may sell the item after a deal sells out.

ALWAYS make sure to double check prices at the time you purchase.  Prices on each deal are as of the time they are posted and are subject to act fast!

2. What is a Lightning Deal?
Lightning deals are price drops that last 3-4 hours.  There is a limited number of items in the deal available so Amazon will show you what percentage of the deal has been claimed as time goes on.

3.  Oh no!  The Lightning Deal I want is 100% claimed!  What do I do?
GO ON THE WAIT LIST!!!!  Once a Lightning Deal is 100% claimed, a button should pop up asking you to join the wait list.  Log back on to Amazon every 5 minutes or so.  If you get called off, a box will pop up notfying you that you got the deal. You then have 15 minutes to purchase the deal.

4. What is Amazon Prime?
For $99, you can join Amazon Prime.  The price may seem steep, but having been a Prime member for years, I honestly think it is 100% worth it!  Here are some of the benefits (taken from Amazon's website):
  • FREE Two-Day Shipping
  • Prime Video: unlimited streaming of movies and TV episodes for paid or free trial members in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. F
  • Prime Music: unlimited, ad-free access to hundreds of Prime Playlists and more than a million songs for members in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
  • Prime Photos: Secure unlimited photo storage in Amazon Cloud Drive.
  • Access to Prime Pantry
  • Prime Early Access: Get 30-minute early access to Lightning Deals
You can sign up for a free trial here.

5.  What is Subscribe and Save?
I post a lot of subscribe and save deals.  Here is how Amazon describes subscribe and save: you receive a discount off the Amazon everyday low price, free standard shipping, and the convenience of automatic deliveries when you receive your subscriptions on your monthly Subscribe & Save delivery day. There are no commitments, obligations, or fees and you can cancel a subscription at any time.

6. You posted that I have to click on the coupon to receive the deal.  Where is it?
It is generally a green box found under the price.

7. The price didn't change after I clicked the coupon!  Did it not apply?
Proceed with the deal and go to the "review subscription" or payment phase of checkout.  The discount should show up there.

So, there you have it!  I hope this helped you get a little more familiar with Amazon!  It can be confusing but oh so addicting.  Happy shopping!
