DIY: How to Make Your Own Pureed Baby Food

In the deal group, it came up one day that I make my own organic baby food.  I was surprised at how many of you were interested in my process for making and storing it!  I am SO sorry that this post is so long overdue.  By now, many of your babies are on table foods, as is my daughter who is quickly approaching her 1st birthday!  Better late than never, right?  

I have found that it is WAY more cost effective to make my own baby food.  Sure, pouches and jarred food on the go are quick and I definitely use them but making my own purees is easy enough (and kind of makes me look like  Pinterest mom!).  This is my method of doing it.  Not sure if it is the perfect way or the right way but it is my way.  Hopefully this is somewhat helpful to someone!

What you need:
Food to puree (My favorites are apples, carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, and green beans)
Cutting board
Steamer basket
Knife
Peeler
A machine to blend your food- I use the Nutribullet with child #2.  I previously had the Magic Bullet but it broke by the time my son was a year so I can't say I recommend it.  The Nutribullet is awesome, though.

Steps


1. Boil water for steamer basket








2. Clean and cut veggies.  








3. Place in steamer basket.   Steam for about 10 minutes until veggies are soft.








4. Place veggies in Nutribullet.  Add in a few Tbsp of the water from the bottom of the steaming pan to soften.  Apparently, the nutrients from the veggies that are lost during the steaming process get caught in the water so that is why I reuse when pureeing.

 

5. Blend until softened.  

6. Spoon puree into ice cube trays and freeze. I use Fresh Baby So Easy Baby Food Trays but I am sure any ice cube tray is fine.  I like these because they come with lids. 








To store, I pop the cubes out and store in gallon freezer bags.  Each cube is approximately 1oz.

 I love mixing and matching cubes and A seems to approve! Stick them in the microwave for 10-20 seconds and you are ready to go!  

So, there you have it!  I find it is easiest to have pureeing marathons where I do a bunch of different veggies but it is also entirely possible to do things as you go.  Good luck and happy pureeing!
